Sir Charles Spencer "Charlie" Chaplin, KBE (16 April 1889 -25 December 1977) was an English comic actor, filmmaker, and composer who rose to fame during the silent era. He is considered as the most recognisable and the greatest silent actor, and has also been the subject of the 1992 film, Chaplin, which was directed by Richard Attenborough and starred Robert Downey Jr. as Charlie.
