In 1988, a young boy named Peter Quill bares witness to his mother dying of a disease, and in dispair, flees the hospital. Upon departing, Peter is abducted by the Ravagers, a group of space pirates led by Yondu Udonta.
Twenty-six years later, an adult Peter Quill lands on the planet Morag and steals an orb and is attacked by Korath, a subordinate of Kree warrior Ronan the Accuser. Peter escapes, but Yondu learns of Peter's theft and issues a bounty in retaliation while Ronan sends his assassin, Gamora, to retrieve the orb. Peter attempts to sell the orb on Xandar, the Nova Empire capital world, but is rejected. Shortly afterwards, he is attacked by Gamora and a duo of bounty hunters, the genetically engineered raccoon Rocket and the tree humanoid Groot. The fight leads to all four being captured and imprisoned in the Kyln. While imprisoned, Gamora is threatened by Drax the Destroyer, who's family was killed by Ronan. However, Peter convinces Drax to spare Gamora's life to lure Ronan to him. Gamora then reveals that she had betrayed Ronan, unwilling to let him use the orb to destroy entire planets. In order to escape, the five cause a prison riot and escape in Peter's ship. Meanwhile, Ronan and Gamora's sister, Nebula, meet Gamora and Nebula's adoptive father Thanos, to discuss Gamora's betrayal.
The five land on the planet Knowhere, a remote criminal outpost, to sell the orb to collector Taneleer Tivan. They open the orb to reveal an Infinity Stone, an item of immense power that destroys all but the most powerful beings that wield it. Taneleer's assistant, Carina, grabs the stone and generates a massive explosion that destroys Taneleer's archives. The group leaves the archives with the orb, only to discover that a drunken Drax had transmitted a message summoning Ronan to Knowhere. At the same time, the Ravagers arrive to reclaim Peter. Drax and Ronan battle while Peter, Gamora and Rocket attempt to flee from Ronan's followers. Nebula destroys Gamora's ship, allowing Ronan's army to retrieve the orb. The Space Ravagers' ship arrives and retrieves Peter and Gamora while Ronan overpowers Drax and abandons him to die. With the Infinity Stone in his possession, Ronan embeds the stone in his warhammer and takes its power for himself. He contacts Thanos and announces his plan to destroy him after obliterating Xandar. Nebula, hateful of Thanos, allies herself with Ronan.
Peter negotiates a truce with Yondu just as Rocket, Drax and Groot arrive. Quill's group allies themselves with the Space Ravagers to stop Ronan. Ronan and his army fly to Xandar, where Quill's group, the Space Ravagers, and the Nova Corps battle against the invading army. Ronan uses his empowered hammer to destroy the Nova Corps fleet, but Quill's group manages to enter Ronan's flagship, the Dark Aster. Nebula and Korath battle the group, but Korath is killed while Nebula escapes. Gamora unlocks Ronan's chamber, but the group is overpowered by Ronan until Rocket uses his ship to crash into the Dark Aster.
As the damaged Dark Aster begins to plummet towards the surface, Groot sacrifices himself to shield the rest of the group. The ship crash lands and Groot is destroyed. Ronan emerges from the ship and prepares to destroy Xandar, but Peter distracts him, allowing Rocket and Drax to destroy his warhammer. Quill grabs the Infinity Stone and nearly dies, but Gamora, Rocket and Drax unite themselves and use the Stone to destroy Ronan. Afterwards, Quill deceives Yondu by delivering him a container supposedly carrying the Infinity Stone, while the real Stone is delivered to the Nova Corps. The Ravagers leave Xandar. Quill's group have their criminal records expunged and become known as the Guardians of the Galaxy. The Nova Corps then inform Quill that he is only half-human, with his father being part of an ancient alien species. The Guardians of the Galaxy then fly off with a sapling cut from Groot.
