Mowgli has been adopted after being taken to the human village by a girl named Shanti, and lives with his adoptive parents and brother, Ranjan. One day, Mowgli attempts to lead the other village children into the jungle, but Shanti alerts his father, who punishes Mowgli. The following night, Mowgli's old friend, the sloth bear Baloo, sneaks into the village and reunites with Mowgli. As Shere Khan, a tiger who holds a grudge against Mowgli, enters the village as well, Mowgli and Baloo flee into the jungle, followed by Shanti.
Shanti is hypnotized by Kaa the snake, but before he can eat her, he is fended off by Ranjan. Mowgli's former guardian, the panther Bagheera, realizes that Mowgli has returned to the jungle and searches for him. Meanwhile, Mowgli bemoans his life in the village and instructs Baloo to scare Shanti off should she come looking for him. While the two arrive at King Louie's abandoned temple, the other jungle animals offend Mowgli by mocking Shanti and the village, prompting him to leave. He encounters Shanti and Ranjan, but Baloo attempts to frighten them off. Baloo then reveals that Mowgli told him to scare her, prompting Shanti to leave with Ranjan.
Mowgli follows the two to make amends, but the three are confronted by Shere Khan. Mowgli and Shanti retreat into an ancient temple while Ranjan stays with Bagheera. In the temple, Shere Khan threatens Shanti, luring Mowgli out of hiding. Before Shere Khan can kill Mowgli, Baloo arrives and distracts him, giving the children a chance to escape. Shere Khan pursues the children across a crater, and the three begin to plummet. However, Baloo saves the children while Shere Khan lands on a rock surrounded by lava and is trapped within the crater. The children return to the village and reunite with their families, but continue to regularly return to the jungle to visit Baloo and Bagheera.
